Application Identifier 20 is used to specify an internal product variant of a standard product. For example, a company wants to distinguish between two identical products from different production sites and thus uses product variant together with GTIN.
Product variant may only be used by brand owner and in cases where there is not enough variation of the product for another GTIN number to be assigned.
A company must wait at least 12 months to reuse the same product variant for another variant within the same product.
AI 20 must perform alongside AI 01 or AI 02.
