How to create environmental grading in GS1Trade Packaging

Environmental graduation in GS1TradePackaging follows the rules and design requirements described in the Executive Order from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. So you can rest assured that the determination and calculation of graduated contributions is done in accordance with current legislation.

A revised version of the Danish Environmental Protection Agency's guidance on setting and calculating graduated contributions can be found on their website. Go to the Danish EPA's page on packaging.

Practicalities about the environmental graduation

Environmental grading in GS1Trade Packaging is done at component level.

Packaging can consist of:

  • Main component, typically the heaviest component
  • Separate component that can be completely separated from the product
  • Integrated component attached to the product

In cases where a piece of packaging consists of a main component (in this example glass) with an integrated component (in this example label), environmental grading must be done together.

Therefore, remember to check that the integrated component is registered to the main component before you start eco-grading. This is because the design criteria in eco-graduation are different for integrated components.

Not sure how to create and assemble integrated components? Read the guide on how to add an embedded component to the main component.

1. Go to the menu item Packaging master data

From the dashboard, click the Packaging master data menu item at the top of the page.

2. Select component for Packaging classification

In the tab on the left, select the desired component to be environmentally graded. In this example, we take a jar for a jam product as a starting point.

Click on the Packaging classification tab. If the component has not yet been environmentally graded, the text will appear in yellow with an exclamation mark.

3. Indicate if component is disposable or recycled material

The difference between the two categories is whether or not the packaging can be refilled or reused for the same purpose multiple times.

4. Select waste type

Indicate whether the component should be sorted as general waste, residual waste or hazardous waste.

Explanations of the different types of waste can be found when a type is selected from the list.

Click Save.

5. Specify the material category

Select a material category from the dropdown list. You need to select the category that is most appropriate for the component. In this example, glass.

If you change the material category, click Save to update, as this will affect the corresponding design requirements.

6. Design requirements are filled in

Depending on the category selected, you will now see a number of design requirements to fill in.

Click Edit details on the right side.

All design criteria are filled in. When you are done, click Save.

7. placement is calculated when level per design criterion is saved

After filling in the design criteria, you can see the result of the environmental grading. The component is placed on an overall level: Low, Medium or High.

The Packaging Classification tab will no longer be indicated in yellow.

Repeat the process for the remaining components, after which the environmental grading is calculated for all components in your product.
