GTIN

In common parlance, many people know the GTIN as a barcode, but technically the GTIN is the number below the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.

GS1 membership

To issue global barcodes for your products, your company must be a member of GS1 Denmark. As part of your membership, you automatically receive one GLN number (EAN number) at no additional cost, which can be used for purposes such as electronic invoicing.

Do you need barcodes for your products?

Barcodes make it possible to identify your products in stores, online shops, and inventory systems. At GS1 Denmark, you can create barcodes through a GS1ID subscription.

When your company purchases barcodes from GS1, it does so through aGS1ID subscription.

With this subscription, you’ll receive a company prefix that identifies your business and serves as the basis for the GTIN numbers used in your product barcodes.

The length of the prefix determines how many unique barcodes you can create.

Example:

A small package can hold a few product numbers.
A larger package can hold many product numbers.

With a GS1ID subscription, you can also generate SSCC numbers for shipments.

SSCC does not affect the number of GTINs you can create.

The capacity is set at the outset and cannot be expanded later. If you run out of numbers, you will need to purchase a newGS1ID subscription to generate more numbers.

Why choose a larger package from the start?

The number of barcodes (GTINs) you can create depends on the number series you choose at the start. The series cannot be expanded later as needed. If you run out of numbers, you must purchase a new number series.

That’s why it might be a good idea to choose a plan that also meets your future needs.

Price example (price per unit per year)

  • 1 item: 257.50 DKK
  • 10 pieces: 113.30 DKK
  • 100 pieces: 14.42 DKK
  • 1,000 pieces: 1.75 DKK
  • 10,000 units: 0.21 DKK
  • 100,000 units: 0.02 DKK

As you can see, 100,000 barcodes cost only about $90 more per year than 1,000 barcodes, but provide 100 times as many numbers.

We therefore recommend that you choose a package that also meets your company’s future needs.

Barcodes must be used to identify medical devices for the United States

GS1 must submit an annual list to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) containing information about which members use their GS1ID for barcoding medical devices sold in the United States.

All GS1 members must therefore indicate whether their GS1ID is used to generate a UDI-DI for labeling medical devices sold in the United States. If you answer yes, your company name will be included in the annual report that GS1 submits to the FDA.

Do you need barcodes for your shipments?

Shipping barcodes are used to identify a shipment, such as a pallet or a package. They are typically used on pallet labels when goods are shipped to retailers, such as Coop, Salling, or Dagrofa.

For shipments, an SSCC code (Serial Shipping Container Code) is used, consisting of 18 digits.

At GS1 Denmark, you can create SSCC numbers as part of a
GS1ID subscription.

Once your company has aGS1ID subscription, you can also generate SSCC numbers for shipments.

SSCC numbers are used to identify a specific shipment, such as a pallet or a package, and enable the tracking of shipments throughout the supply chain.

An SSCC consists of 18 digits and is generated based on your GS1 company prefix, which you receive through aGS1ID subscription.

SSCC numbers are typically used on pallet labels for shipments to retailers and logistics partners.

With a GS1ID subscription, you can create both GTINs for products and SSCCs for shipments. SSCC numbers do not affect the number of GTINs you can create

How many SSCC numbers can you create?

With aGS1ID subscription, you can generate large numbers of SSCC numbers for shipments, such as for pallet labels.

Even the smallest subscription plan allows you to generate up to 1,000,000 SSCC numbers, and larger plans allow for even more. For most companies, this means that, in practice, they will never run out.

Choosing a larger package is therefore usually only relevant if you also plan to use the subscription to create product barcodes (GTINs) at a later date.

At GS1 Denmark, we are required to collect information about the intended use of a GLN when we issue it. We publish this information inGS1Trade Activate (where you can find your GLN) and in Verified by GS1, which is GS1’s global registry of identifiers issued by GS1 organizations worldwide.

Digital Location: Do you need your GLN to send and receive orders and invoices electronically? Or to use aGS1Trade Service—such as Trade Sync or Trade Packaging? If so, select Digital Location.

Legal entity: If you need to use your GLN to identify a legal entity—such as a business, government agency, department, nonprofit organization, individual, or institution—select "Legal entity."

Function: A GLN can also be used to identify a department within an organization that does not have its own CVR number. If this is the primary purpose, select "Function."

Fixed physical location: Do you need to use your GLN to identify a specific physical location—such as a meter, a fire hydrant, or similar—that has an address or location coordinate? If so, select "Fixed physical location."

It is perfectly normal to use multiple GLNs for different purposes, but each GLN should have only one clearly defined primary use.

Why am I only paying part of the annual fee?

At GS1 Denmark, subscriptions are typically billed annually. When you sign up, you therefore only pay for the remainder of the current year. After that, the subscription will be renewed at the full annual rate.
