In common parlance, many people know the GTIN as a barcode, but technically the GTIN is the number below the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
The last digit of all GS1 numbers is a computer-generated check digit, which is calculated based on its preceding digits. The check digit is used to ensure correct composition of a number and barcode.
It is important that the check digit is correct - if it is incorrect, the barcode cannot be read.
You can calculate your check digit by entering your number in the white box to the right.
You can enter either 7, 11, 12, 13 or 17 digits in the calculator depeding on the barcode type (GTIN-8, UPC, GTIN-13, GTIN-14 and SSCC).
If you need to calculate multiple check digits simulaneously, please contact us to receive an Excel sheet to make the calculations.
