Guide to Linking Integrated Packaging Components in GS1Trade Packaging

Some packaging consists of both a main component and integrated components. By definition, an integrated component is a packaging component that cannot easily be removed from the main component during transport or waste sorting.

A jam jar is an example of packaging that consists of a main component (glass) and an integrated component (label). This product serves as the basis for the examples in the following guide. Another example is a spice jar (main component) where the integrated component (lid) is welded on.

According to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency's regulation, packaging consisting of a main component and an integrated component must be environmentally graded as a whole. In addition, the weight of the integrated component must be added to the weight of the main component. Therefore, the integrated component must be linked to the main component in GS1Trade Packaging. Here we show you how:

1. Go to the Packaging Master Data Menu

From the dashboard, click on the Packaging Master Data tab at the top of the page.

2. Create the Main Component

Click the Create button and select Create New Component.

Fill in the required fields and click Save.

3. Create the Integrated Component

Next, create the integrated component (in this example, the label).

Follow the same process as before: click Create New Component, fill in the fields, and click Save.

4. Add the Integrated Component to the Main Component

Now, go back to the main component (the glass jar).

Click Edit by the Integrated Components tab.

Select the integrated component from the list and drag it into the empty field.

Under the Join type field, choose from the dropdown menu how the integrated component is attached to the main component.

Click Save.

Your main component has now been enriched with an integrated component and is ready for environmental grading.

5. Create packaging unit with a main component

You can now create packaging units that include your main component. Please note that integrated components automatically follow the main component, so you only need to place the main component in your packaging unit. As in, do not add the integrated component as well.

  1. Create a packaging unit.
  1. Search for your main component (glass) and place it in the unit. The label is automatically added here because you have placed the label as an integrated component. The label should therefore not be placed as a separate component otherwise it will count twice.
  1. Search for the other separate components that your unit consists of. In this case, just the lid.
